Sheet 02 · The phone call
Questions to ask a home care agency before hiring
You have a number for a company in Ballwin or Chesterfield and ten minutes before your next meeting. The questions to ask a home care agency before hiring are not a vibe. They are a scorecard. Print this page. Fill the blanks while they talk. These are questions to ask any company. This desk does not print anyone’s answers, including the paid placement at the bottom. There is no price question on this sheet. Rate questions go to the phone, and they stay off this page.
The National Institute on Aging tells you to get as much information as you can about a service before you sign an agreement, and it publishes a worksheet of questions to ask before hiring a care provider. Family Caregiver Alliance’s ten tips for hiring through an agency are the other half of this call: background checks, training, local requirements, supervision, meeting the person, a care plan. What questions should I ask when interviewing a caregiver for my dad is the same list, asked of the person if you meet them, and asked of the office if you do not.

Who answers at 2am
What number do I call after hours, who picks it up, and how long until someone is in the house if my parent cannot be left alone?
A good answer sounds like A live number, a name or a role, and a time in minutes or hours, written down while they are still on the line.Walk away if “Leave a message” is the whole after-hours plan, or they will not give you a number until you sign. -
Who covers a no-show
If the caregiver does not arrive, who comes, from where, and what time should I expect them?
A good answer sounds like Family Caregiver Alliance says an agency can provide a substitute if a worker is sick. You want that substitute named as a process, not as a hope.Walk away if They tell you it has never happened, or that you should call a neighbor. -
How do they screen
How do home care agencies screen and train their caregivers, at this company, in this state? What background check, which registry, which references?
A good answer sounds like FCA says ask about caregiver background checks and what methods they use, and ask about training. In Missouri, ask whether they use the Family Care Safety Registry. Then you still call a reference yourself.Walk away if They will not say what they check, or they treat the question as an insult. -
Missouri’s own rule
Which of Missouri’s three types of care in the home are you? Home health, Medicaid in-home care, or private duty and private pay?
A good answer sounds like They can point at the DHSS page. DHSS says no license is issued in Missouri for private duty and private pay companion and personal care. A straight answer uses that sentence.Walk away if They blur home health and companion hours into one product, or they will not say which type they are. -
The first visit
Can I meet the caregiver before the first shift? Who comes to the house to plan the first day, and what do you need from me?
A good answer sounds like FCA says ask to meet potential caregivers and talk about a care plan before the first shift. NIA’s getting-started page is the task list: personal care, household tasks, food, transportation.Walk away if A stranger will just show up, and there is no plan on paper. -
Supervision
Who checks the work in the house, how often, and how will I know they were there?
A good answer sounds like FCA says family caregivers have a right to ask about how the agency supervises the quality of care in the home, including drop-in visits. FCA’s working-successfully page says to clarify whether the agency supervises its employees on a regular basis at the care recipient’s home.Walk away if “We trust our people” is the whole supervision plan. -
How do I raise a problem?
If it is not working, who do I call, what happens next, and can I ask for a different caregiver?
A good answer sounds like A name, a number, and yes, you can request a different person. FCA says if you feel uncomfortable with the person who is sent, you can always ask the agency to send someone else.Walk away if The only path is a one-star review, or they tell you problems mean you are being too picky. -
The written agreement
What is in the agreement before I sign: duties, hours, backup, who employs the worker, how either side ends it?
A good answer sounds like They will send the packet before anyone comes. FCA says request a packet that describes services, fees, and a list of references. Read it. This sheet still does not print a rate.Walk away if They want a signature before you have seen the paper, or the paper will not name backup or duties.
Red flags when hiring a home caregiver
A red flag is not a feeling. It is an answer you cannot write down. They will not say how they screen. They will not give an after-hours number. They will not let you meet the person. They treat Missouri’s three types as a trick question. They want health details in a web form. They push you to skip references. FCA’s own line on gut is allowed here as a question of comfort, not as a medical claim: if you feel uncomfortable about a screening procedure, the tip sheet says it may be best to use a different provider. That is still your call, on your pad, with the blanks filled.
Non-medical home care in St. Louis County, what to ask on the phone, is this scorecard. Home care agencies near Ballwin, how to choose, is this scorecard used twice. Do not choose on a website paragraph. Choose on the eight answers.
What to do tonight
- Print this page. Two copies if a sibling is on the call.
- Write the town and the hours you cannot cover at the top.
- Call one company with the sheet in front of you. Fill every blank or write “would not answer.”
- Call the after-hours number they gave you, tonight, to see who picks up.
- Do not sign anything until the packet is in your hands.
When to ask the care team or the doctor
Which tasks need a nurse, whether a parent is homebound, and whether home health is in the plan are questions for the physician. Do not let a sales call decide them. If the company offers to do wound care, injections, or anything you think of as nursing, stop and ask which clinician is ordering it. Non-medical help does not make that call.
